Waldfriedhof München is divided into an old and a new section. The two areas represent different stages of development and distinct landscape settings.
Two stages of development
- 1907
Completion of the old section
The concept for the old section was developed by municipal architect Hans Grässel. The burial plots were laid out within existing woodland.
- 1960s
Addition of the new section
Waldfriedhof München was extended with the new section. A lake, long-grass meadows and biotope areas shape this part of the cemetery.
The old section
Municipal architect Hans Grässel developed the concept for the old section. Its burial plots were laid out within existing woodland.
Curving paths, some of which have the character of woodland trails, are part of the design of this section. The old section was completed in 1907.
The new section
Waldfriedhof München was extended with the new section during the 1960s. This area is shaped by a lake, long-grass meadows and biotope areas.
Locate the history on the grounds
The cemetery map helps visitors locate the old and new sections. The cemetery tour connects four mapped points of reference in the old section and provides a practical introduction to part of the grounds.
