Prepare a grave search at Waldfriedhof München or use GraveStay for photo documentation and precise geographic coordinates.

On this page

With approx. 64,500 burial plots across 161.32 ha, searching on site without a reliable location reference is difficult to plan. The essential first step is to establish whether the grave is in the old or new section.

Searching for a grave yourself

If you already have a location reference

If you know whether the grave is in the old or new section, open the relevant PDF on the cemetery map page. If only the section is known but the specific area is not, the map may still be insufficient for an unambiguous location.

If the location reference is missing

Contact the cemetery administration to ask what official information may be available for your case. This portal does not maintain a public grave register and cannot replace official information from the administration.

Before visiting

  • Establish whether the old or new section is meant, if possible.
  • Open the appropriate PDF map before travelling.
  • Check the seasonal opening hours.
  • With incomplete information, do not expect to find a grave by name alone across the extensive grounds.

Please note: The PDF maps do not include a name search. A reliable location reference is therefore needed for an independent search.

Grave search by GraveStay

If you cannot locate the grave yourself, GraveStay can carry out the search on site. At minimum, a request requires the name as it appears on the headstone. The more precisely you can describe the location, the lower the starting price.

How the grave search works

  1. Provide the available information

You provide at least the name as it appears on the headstone, together with any available location details.

  2. Pay before the search begins

Full payment is made before GraveStay begins the search.

  3. Search for the grave on site

GraveStay searches for the grave at the specified cemetery.

  4. Receive the result

Once the grave has been found, you receive photo documentation and its precise geographic coordinates.

Search result

Once the grave has been found, you receive photo documentation of the grave and its precise geographic coordinates. These details make it possible to locate the grave directly during a later visit.

Payment and refunds

Full payment is made before the search begins. If it is known with certainty that the grave is located in the specified cemetery and GraveStay is nevertheless unable to find it, the amount paid is refunded. In all other cases, no refund is made.
